Last month, the Lloydminster region celebrated the completion of construction on an estimated $14 million Highway 17 passing lanes project straddling the Alberta-Saskatchewan border.
“This unique highway is now improved to help better move residents, industry, business and tourists of both provinces and connects to the border City of Lloydminster that provides key services for the region,” Saskatchewan Highways Minister Kim Gartner said. “Highway 17 also links to a network of key interprovincial routes, which help move land-locked Saskatchewan’s export-based economy that sustains our quality of life.”
The interprovincial project between the north of Lloydminster and the south of Onion Lake Cree Nation included five new passing lanes, a culvert installation, two intersection treatments and a grade raise to improve motorists’ sightlines near Sandy Beach Lake and one additional intersection treatment north of the city.
“Alberta is proud to have partnered with Saskatchewan to complete key safety improvements on Highway 17 which will support trade, development and economic growth, and reduce congestion to improve travel for residents and industry in both provinces,” Alberta Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors Devin Dreeshen said.
On-site work began in August 2025, and highway construction was recently completed. The Government of Saskatchewan led the project, with the Government of Alberta funding half of the costs, as Highway 17 runs north-south between both provinces.
