As we enter the busiest months of the construction season across Saskatchewan, I want to emphasize a core priority that defines our industry: safety.

We all know that our peak season brings longer days, accelerated timelines and increased activity on our highways, in urban work zones and at resource development sites. With that comes a heightened responsibility for every worker on site, every motorist navigating work zones and every member of the communities where we are working.

When it comes to safety, SHCA members lead by example, upholding the highest standards. Our members consistently demonstrate that rigorous training, proactive risk management and a culture of accountability are not merely regulatory requirements but the foundation of our industry. Whether through comprehensive operator certification, equipment maintenance protocols or daily hazard assessments, SHCA members continue to set the benchmark for heavy construction safety in our province. Worker safety remains our top priority.

We work in an industry where one wrong decision could bring catastrophic results. Every incident is preventable, and we owe it to our workforce to ensure they return home safe every day. Excellent training resources are available to our members through our partnerships, including those with the Safety Association of Saskatchewan Manufacturers, to keep skills sharp, maintain compliance and ensure that the importance of safety first is embedded in all the work our industry does.

We know that safety remains a two-way street. Our workers must adhere to safety protocols, but so too must community members who travel through our work zones.

Work zones demand respect and vigilance from all road users. The SHCA continues to advocate for stronger public education campaigns, improved signage standards and enforcement measures that protect both our crews and the public. By collaborating with government partners and stakeholders, we are working to reduce incidents caused by driver distraction or impatience – a common challenge that intensifies during peak construction periods.

Our advocacy focuses on integrating industry-driven standards into provincial policy. We believe that well-trained professionals operating under strong safety frameworks deliver better projects, create stronger communities and support the province’s economic growth.

SHCA remains committed to supporting our members and the communities they work in by providing the industry’s best safety practices.

Stay safe and stay vigilant!
